Well one does wonder what is there to discuss about a short story being made into a 2.45 hr movie about Benjamin (Brad Pitt) who is born old and ages backwards. Nothing. Which for me summed up CCoBB. There are moments large portions of the movie where you wait for something to happen but unfortuntely nothing does. There are movies that ebb and flow, CCoBB belongs to that category of movie that drifts literally.
It is the story/journey of Benjamin Button, who is abandoned by his father as he looks like an old man (monstrosity is what his dad calls him). Ironically, he grows up in an old age home and goes younger day by day. In this journey, he falls in love with Daisy (Cate Blanchett), spends time in Russia during the war, comes back, rejects Daisy who in turn rejects him later and then comes back to him and they try to spend their life happily ever types.
Brad Pitt has given a restrained performance. This was 2nd good performance after Burn After Reading but there are occasions when you know the actor vanishes and the star takes centre-stage. Cate Blanchett does a good job as Daisy, who struggles with normal human emotions and shows them off well enough.
Make-up is the best part. Amazing work has been put in and kudos. They made Cate Blanchett look like a 16 year old girl while the older Brad Pitt is simply amazing.
The movie suffers from a slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww first half and a much pacier second half.
In short, CCoBB is a movie tinged with love, sweetness, sadness and regret and one can understand why it was nominated for the Oscars.
Rating – 5.5/10
PS: Frankly not my kind of movie. :). Frankly had i watched it on laptop, i doubt if i would have crossed the half hour mark. Since I paid and watched it on the big screen, I had to sit through. Gimme my tommy gun wielding action heroes any day 🙂
PPS: It also didnt help that Vaaranam Aayiram released a few months ago. Even that had Surya in various ages and an equally slow storyline. However, in typical Indian style, there were songs which ensured that you did watch the movie with rapt attention then.
