2010 movie reviews – Part 1

Posted: January 5, 2011 in Everyone's a critic, Movies

Last year, I had highlighted 20 or so movies to watch out for in 2010 (Part1, Part2) and at the end of the year, its now time to sit back and review the same as well as rate them.

1. Iron Man 2 – or how even the best cowboys have daddy issues.

Hot: Robert Downey Jr. Robert Downey Jr. Robert Downey Jr with all his snarky charm. A brilliant first act, Sam Rockwell as the smarmy slimy wannabe-Tony-Stark Justine Hammer, Scarlett Johansson, RDJ & Gweneth Paltrow’s witty banter & simmering chemistry, Marvel Universe Easter Eggs, Thor’s Hammer Mjolnir, Highway to Hell, Suitcase armor, the quip of the year “I have successfully privatized world peace” and oh, did I mention Robert Downey Jr
Not-Hot: Flabby 2nd act, Mickey Rourke’s vanishing act after the Monaco gate crash, Too much of focus on the Avengers, Too little of a focus on Stark’s drink problems; Tony Stark is an alcoholic not because he is going to die but because hes an alcoholic

Rating: 7 repulsor thrusters on 10

2. Shutter Island – or I am not schizophrenic. Neither am I

Hot: Leonardo DiCaprio – Brilliant, Mark Ruffalo – outstanding, Taut screenplay, Moody & tense background score, Harrowing flashback and a strong supporting cast
Not-Hot: Exposition ridden dialogs, Predictable misdirection, Too little screen time for awesome characters like Jackie Earle Haley & Emily Mortimer, Max Von Sydow WTF!!!!

Rating: 8 psychotic creepy islands on 10

3. The Losers – Not quite but not the winner too

Hot: Jefferey Dean Morgan – Rougish charm and coolth, Chris Evans’ antics, 2 awesome awesome moments for Oscar Jaenada (Cougar) and Crackling pace
Not-Hot: Poor villain characterization – too campy, Biggest blunder – not staying true to the source. Andy Diggle has a fairly wicked style and dialog, too much upping the camp factor on the movie

Rating: 5.5 spent bullets on 10

4. The Book of Eli – or You did not see that twist

Hot: Buffed up Denzel Washington, Villanous Gary Oldman, Drop dead deadly eyes on Mila Kunis, Slickly choreographed fight sequences, Desolate post apocalyptic world and a 1st Generation ipod
Not-Hot: Too too cute a twist , Scarcely plausible reason behind the search for the book, Uneven movie pace

Rating: 7 lone warriors on 10

5. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightening Thief – or How to effectively kill a movie franchise in its 1st outing

Hot: On screen representation of the underworld & Mount Olympus
Not-Hot: A FUBAR version of Rick Riordan’s story, Bemused A-listers (Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman & Sean Bean)

Rating: 3 squabbling demi-gods on 10

6. Alice in Wonderland – or Alice in Blunderland

Hot: Helena Bonham Carter – Respect Total Respect and Mad Hatter Johnny Depp
Not-Hot: A totally overawed Mia Wasikowska as Alice, A very predictable storyline, 3D which distracts more than adding value (and 2 pounds to the ticket cost)

Rating: 5 not-so deep rabbit holes on 10

7. Kick-Ass – or what to gift your daughter on her birthday

Hot: Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl – oozing real attitude and skill, she simply steals the show, Nicholas Cage’s best Adam West’s Batman imitation, an over the top storline, irreverant take on super heros, Lyndsy Foseca (so super cute, sigh) and a bazooka
Not-Hot: Straying from the comic towards the climax, No reference to Tunk, Early reveal of Red Mist’s identity

Rating: 9 katana-wielding-&-4-letter-bomb-dropping-11 year olds on 10

8. Price of Persia: The sands of time – or How Persia was populated by Westerners

Hot: Parkor fight sequences, Capture of Alamut, Ostrich races, Alfred Molina kissing an ostrich and an obviously well worked-out Jake Gylenhall
Not-Hot: Westerners playing Persians, Hassansins, 15 mins too long, Gemma Atherton’s British accent

Rating: 6 frustratingly large sand glasses on 10

9. Inception – or So whose dream is it anyway

Hot: Everything :), Cool concept, immaculate execution, awesome screenplay, tremendous casting, fundoo direction, funky world changing architecture effects, anti-gravity fights, Hans Zimmer’s haunting soundtrack and a spinning top
Not-Hot: too much bound by the rules of the Nolan world, not a one-time watch movie (really minor quibblings)

Rating: 10 layers of dreams on 10

10. The Last Airbender – Lets hope so

Hot: The locations
Not-Hot: Pretty much everything. Attempting to compress a season’s worth of storytelling in less than 2 hours screws everything up. Muddled storytelling, an action movie without jaw dropping action, a what-the-f-am-I-doing-here-where-is-Frieda-Pinto looking Dev Patel, pretty much everything and I wont even get to the part where all good characters are played by westerners and bad characters by Asians

Rating: 1 confused little bald airbender on 10
